FREEDOM WALKWAY

About

Freedom Walkway is an outdoor public art space adjacent to the historical McCrorys location that is of historical significance for the lunch counter sit-ins of Friendship College students demonstrating against segregation. The walkway was established to preserve the history of the heroic efforts during the Civil Rights era to fight for justice and equality for Black peoples rights. There are beautiful, creative murals surrounding the artistic landscape representing reconciliation, connectivity, hope and the quest for universal peace through symbolic expressions in the walkway.

Location: 139 E. Main St., Old Town Rock Hill, SC

Dr. Goudlock was honored in 2022 with a tribute plaque installed in the Freedom Walkway

Dr. Goudlock's name is inscribed on cobblestones amongst other brave people who paved the way for Black people to be treated with equal respect as human beings. It appropriately reads, Dr. James H. Goudlock~ A Quiet Warrior for Freedom, Justice and Equality
